Adam Massman Cause of Death: 17-Year-Old Lincoln High School Athlete Dies After Football Injury

The Alma Center, Wisconsin, community is mourning the heartbreaking death of Adam Massman, a 17-year-old senior at Lincoln High School who died after suffering an injury during a football game.

Massman was injured during Lincoln High School’s game against Turtle Lake on Thursday night, August 20, 2026. Emergency medical personnel who were present at the game provided treatment before he was transported to a hospital for further care. The Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District confirmed Saturday that Massman had died from the injury.

The district has not released specific details about how the injury occurred. More recent reporting says the details are being withheld at the family’s request, and there has been no public confirmation of the exact medical cause of death beyond the injury sustained during the football game.

Adam was a talented multi-sport athlete. On the football field, he played quarterback and defensive back for the Lincoln Hornets. He also competed in basketball and baseball, establishing himself as a dedicated student-athlete across several seasons.

During the 2025 football season, Massman recorded 858 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns in six games. He also rushed for 280 yards and three touchdowns, finishing with 1,138 total yards, according to statistics reported by WEAU. The school district opened Lincoln Jr./Sr. High School to students, parents and friends following news of Adam’s death, providing an opportunity for members of the community to gather and grieve together. Counselors have also been made available to help students and staff cope with the loss. Additional counseling support was scheduled to begin Monday, August 24, and continue as students returned to school.

Adam’s family also has deep ties throughout the Lincoln school system. His mother, Brianne Massman, works as an elementary school counselor, while a sibling attends the junior high school. Other relatives are connected to the district as teachers and school board members.
