A fire near the railway line between London Fields and Cambridge Heath in East London has caused significant disruption to rail services around Hackney Downs today, Monday, August 24, 2026.
According to National Rail, the fire broke out next to the tracks on Sunday and damaged signalling equipment, resulting in cancellations, delays and revised services affecting both Greater Anglia and London Overground routes.
The incident is particularly affecting services running between London Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs, with trains unable to operate normally through the affected section. National Rail said the disruption was expected to continue into Monday, while Network Rail engineers worked to replace the damaged signalling cables.
The affected routes include Greater Anglia services between London Liverpool Street and destinations including Stansted Airport, Cambridge, Cambridge North, Ely and Hertford East. London Overground services serving Cheshunt, Enfield Town and Chingford have also been affected.
Passengers travelling through Hackney Downs are being advised to allow additional time for their journeys and check the latest service information before travelling.
Fire Causes Rail Disruption
The fire occurred alongside the railway rather than being reported as a major blaze inside Hackney Downs itself. However, damage to railway signalling infrastructure has created significant operational problems.
National Rail reported that Greater Anglia services were being diverted via Stratford, while some trains were cancelled to reduce congestion. Tickets were being accepted on alternative routes, including London Overground services between Stratford and Hackney Central and London Underground services between Liverpool Street and King’s Cross.
London Overground services were also affected, with the line between Seven Sisters and Hackney Downs closed at the time of the latest update. Some services were operating only between Cheshunt, Enfield Town and Seven Sisters, while other services faced severe reductions.
The incident comes after several recent fires in the wider Hackney area. In May, London Fire Brigade crews tackled a separate fire involving a static caravan, two cars and a railway embankment in Hackney. Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters attended that incident, which was later brought under control.
That earlier fire was eventually attributed to dried vegetation on a railway embankment being ignited by sunlight through a discarded glass bottle, according to London Fire Brigade. There were no reported injuries.
The current Hackney Downs incident is separate, and authorities have not indicated that the cause of the latest trackside fire was the same.
